WIESBADEN - The surveys of households in the 2022 Census are finished. The municipal survey offices and the statistical offices of the Federation and the Länder successfully completed the surveys on 30 November 2022, which had been running since 15 May 2022. A total of 11.7 million people in Germany were interviewed. Most of the questions could be answered online. An additional follow-up survey for quality assessment was held among a small number of the households surveyed before. The follow-up survey is completed now, too. The statistical offices of the Federation and the Länder thank everyone for their participation.

Thiel: “Successful completion of household surveys is a major milestone”
“By completing the household surveys, we have reached a major milestone of the 2022 Census. Now the collected data can be processed at the statistical offices of the Federation and the Länder”, says Dr. Georg Thiel, President of the Federal Statistical Office. “Major steps are planned for the coming months to assure data quality. We will release a new number of inhabitants and all other results of the Census 2022 in November 2023.”

Special thanks to everyone involved
“The authorities at the federal, Land and municipal levels have made huge efforts in the last few months”, says Dr. Thomas Gößl, President of the Land Office for Statistics of Bayern. “I would like to express my special thanks to everyone involved in the successful implementation of the project, the municipal survey offices, the 100,000 volunteer interviewers and especially the people who answered to the 2022 Census.”

23.6 million responses received in the census of buildings and housing
There have been 23.6 million responses to the census of buildings and housing of the 2022 Census so far, which is a response rate of roughly 94% for all of Germany. The statistical offices of the Federation and the Länder are asking all those who have not yet provided the relevant information to comply with this obligation. It is particularly gratifying that 83% of the answers were supplied by online questionnaire. This also saved considerable amounts of paper.

The results of the census are highly relevant for Germany
The population figures determined by the census are a major basis for many regulations. They are used to set constituency boundaries, organise the distribution of Bundesrat votes and calculate the fiscal equalisation schemes among the Länder and among municipalities. The census also collects data on the residential space, education and working life of the population. The census results are used by political decision-makers at federal, Land and municipal levels and in the European Union as a major data basis for planning. The Census 2022 also collects information on energy sources and heating types. In the current energy crisis, this is of particular importance.
